Emptying the Vacuum Can
Models S1870, S1900 & S3500
The mass of debris picked up by your Vacu-Maid is deposited in the “dirt canister”. (The bottom of the long can). This canister will need to be emptied on a periodic basis. It is attached to the bottom of your “filter canister”. (Silver colour) As a general rule, empty when half full.
1. Tap the dirt canister to ascertain the volume of debris. In rare cases, it could contain water which is extremely heavy.
2. To remove the dirt canister, support the bottom of the canister with your knee (photo 1), then unsnap the two latches. Note: The latches may be tight, but do not try to adjust them. They need to latch tightly to ensure a proper seal, which is vital in the operation of the cyclonic separation.

3. Carefully lower the dirt canister and empty the debris into a rubbish container. Note: Your dirt collection canister may be fitted with a “Plastic Bag Liner” which is optional.
4. Replace the dirt canister by slipping the rim of the dirt canister over the lip of the “filter canister” until it is seated against the rim gasket. Then while holding the canister in place with your knee (photo 1), fasten the two latches. Do this by hooking the top lip of each latch over the rim of the “filter canister” and then press straight in on the bottom of the latches until they lock. If you have trouble removing or replacing the dirt canister using your knee, try supporting the can with one hand, unlatching (or re-latching) one side with the other hand. Then, reverse your hands to unlatch (or re-latch) the other side.
• Do not interfere with the smaller canister. This contains the electric motor unit and is mounted separately from the filter & dirt canister. (usually marked “Silent Partner”)
• Note: Do not suck up puddles of water or use on wet surfaces. This will cause blockages over time. Electric shock could occur.
How often should I empty my Dirt Canister?
Initially, the dirt canister should be checked or emptied weekly until you know how long it takes to half fill the canister under your normal cleaning routine. All vacuum systems will function more effectively if the filter system is emptied frequently. Don’t allow your dirt canister to become more than 3/4 full before emptying.
Note: The canister will fill more rapidly if NEW carpets are being cleaned for there is usually a tremendous quantity of loose fibres that are retained in the carpet from the manufacturing process. In some instances it may take several months before all of these loose fibres are removed.
Lack of Suction and Trouble-shooting.
If you notice a lack of suction or power, the Electro-Static screen may be blocked.
Remove lid (photo 2) and clean. Other possible reasons are: Plastic liner bag tangled, lid not seated properly, centre pipe too close to lid, an air leak or a blockage. To determine if machine is causing a problem, try plugging the hose into the inlet on the side of the unit. (Utility inlet). If weak or no suction at this point, then it is likely to be a machine problem. If the motor does not start, check your house electrical circuit. Contact us for Maintenance or any problems.

Cleaning the Electro-Static Screen & the Metal Screen
Recommended every 3 months (or monthly if you have dogs or cats).
1. Lift the lid off the “filter canister” (photo 2). The soft flyscreen disk is the Electro-Static screen.
2. Lift out the screen and clean by vacuuming, rinsing with water, or shaking. Before replacing the Electro-Static screen, make certain it is completely dry or it will void warranty. Replace in position on the metal screen.
3. The solid wire screen may be cleaned by using a rag, a dusting brush or by picking out the fluff with your fingers.
4. Replace the lid squarely and securely on the top of the canister, otherwise it will allow a vacuum leak.
